Microneedling

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that’s used to treat skin concerns via collagen production. Also known as collagen induction therapy, this treatment may help those looking to reduce the appearance of acne scars and stretch marks.  It’s also used in certain anti-aging procedures, such as eyelid surgery and sun spots.

Microneedling isn’t effective for hair loss, despite the possible role of collagen in hair growth.

Microneedling works by encouraging your skin to make more collagen. The idea is that pinpricks from the procedure cause slight injury to the skin and that the skin responds by making new collagen-rich tissue.  This new skin tissue is, in turn, more even in tone and texture. It’s normal for the skin to lose collagen via age or injury. By encouraging the skin to make new tissue, there may be more collagen to help make the skin firmer, too.

During the procedure, our therapist makes small pricks under the skin with a pen-like tool. The pinpricks are so small that you likely won’t notice them after the procedure. Our therapist will move the tool evenly across your skin so that the new skin that rejuvenates will be even, too.

Before getting started, you will be advised to apply a topical anaesthetic at least 1 hour prior to your procedure to reduce the chances of pain, the actual microneedling process takes approximately 30 minutes.  Our therapist will then apply a serum collagen mask which is left on for approx. 10 to 15 minutes.   In total, you can expect the treatment to take at least an hour.

Targeted areas for microneedling are most often on your face:

  • acne scars

  • age spots (also called “sun spots”)

  • fine lines and wrinkles

  • large pores

  • other types of scars

  • reduced skin elasticity

  • uneven skin tone

In addition to facial concerns, microneedling is sometimes used to treat stretch marks in other areas of the body.  Scarring on other body parts may also be treated with this procedure. However, microneedling is primarily used on the face.

Like all cosmetic procedures, microneedling isn’t without risk. The most common side effect is minor skin irritation immediately following the procedure. You may also see redness for a few days.

Call your therapist if you notice more severe side effects, such as:

  • bleeding

  • bruising

  • infection

  • peeling

You may not be an ideal candidate for microneedling if you:

  • are pregnant

  • have certain skin diseases, such as psoriasis or eczema

  • have open wounds

  • have had radiation therapy recently

  • have a history of skin scars

Microneedling isn’t invasive like plastic surgery, so the recovery time is minimal, most people require very little downtime, if any at all.  You may notice skin irritation and redness within the first few days following the procedure. This is a natural response to the small “injuries” made by the needles in your skin.  You can go back to work after the procedure if you’re comfortable. Some people apply camouflaging makeup during the first few days as the redness dissipates.  Your skin will also be more sensitive to the sun, so sunscreen is a must.

After microneedling, your skin works quickly to rejuvenate new tissue. In theory, you should see results within a couple of weeks.  To maintain the results of your treatment, you’ll need multiple sessions and perhaps other complementing treatments. Our Therapist doctor will advise you on the best plan of action based on your individual goals.  Before the procedure, talk to our therapist during your consultation about ways you can prepare so you have the best possible outcome. You may need to stop taking certain medications, such as ibuprofen and those for acne treatment, well in advance of the procedure.  Our therapist will also recommend that you stop using topical  retinoids beforehand too. Doing so may reduce the risk of certain side effects.

Hyaluronic Acid or Dermal Fillers

Hyaluronic acid is the most hydrating substance in the world, and a naturally occurring sugar in the body alongside elastin and collagen. It provides skin tissue with adequate moisture levels to help hold it’s form, keeping your skin looking hydrated and plump.  Hyaluronic acid also comes commercially in the form of a gel that can be injected into the those areas that have lost or are absent of volume, such as lips. Juvederm and Restylane are the most popular and well known forms of hyaluronic acid fillers. By injecting the hyaluronic acid fillers we are inducing new collagen and new elastic to be formed, rejuvenating the face, lifting cheek, lips and other areas of lost volume.

Hyaluronic is one of nature’s most powerful humectants and is now being added to moisturizers and other beauty products like anti-aging serums and even “Vitamin C”. It is also incorporated into skincare treatments like microneedling.  1 molecule of HA can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water.  Symmetrical and full lips are a feature of youthful attractiveness. Lips reach their fullness around our early twenties. As we age, natural substances that provide the skin with structure and volume, such as collagen and hyaluronic acid, decrease. This, along with environmental factors such as exposure to sun damage, smoking, etc., all contributes to how our lips age and form wrinkles. Over time the corners of the mouth also begin to droop resulting in the mouth frown. The shape of the upper lip known as the Cupid’s bow begins to flatten out and we start to lose the appearance of having full lips and volume.

Over the years, the body itself produces less Hyaluronic Acid - more specifically the collagen fibre network is stretched and allows less Hyaluronic Acid molecules to bind with water. It results in lesser hydration of the skin that, combined with thinning of fat tissue on the forehead and cheeks,  and thickening of it on the neck and chin, results in deepening wrinkles.  The Hyaluronic Acid found in the body is exactly the same as the Hyaluronic Acid inserted into the skin.. However, if you get a good filler, the longevity of the Hyaluronic Acid is absolutely different. The Hyaluronic Acid the human body produces has a pretty short lifespan (around 3-5 days), however the Hyaluronic Acid in the product that can be launched into the Demis can last for months (more specifically 4-6 months, usually, when it comes to fillers).

This is possible due to cross-linking, that allows a higher number of connections to be made between the molecules of the Hyaluronic Acid inside the filler, thus slowing down the enzymatic degradation. Basically, it means that the substance still is removed from the body through the natural degradation process and it just takes more time, allowing the Hyaluronic Acid inserted to retain the water inside the skin over its longer life-span.

Injectible filler

Face and lip fillers (dermal fillers) are substances injected into your face. They fill lines and wrinkles and add volume to areas such as your lips or cheeks.  Fillers are not permanent. How long they last depends on things like the type of filler and where it's injected. They usually last between 6 and 18 months.  Our dermal fillers contain a natural substance called hyaluronic acid.  If you have fillers, the rest of your face will continue to age as normal.  If you're thinking about having dermal fillers, be clear about why you want them and chat these through at your free consultation with our practitioner.

Also ask our practitioner about:

  • our practitioner's experience and qualifications

  • the name of the product we use and how and where it's made

  • any risks or possible side effects

  • what will happen if things go wrong

  • what insurance cover we have

An anaesthetic cream might be used first to numb your skin. Injections are given around the area of your face being treated, which is then massaged.  It might feel uncomfortable but should not be painful.  The treatment usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on the area being treated.  Afterwards the affected area may be a bit red, sore and swollen. Any swelling or bruising should settle down in a few days.  You will be advised about what to do to help reduce the risk of side effects.  This includes not wearing make-up immediately after the procedure and avoiding alcohol.

Speak to your practitioner about the risks, serious problems are rare but can include:

  • infection

  • a lumpy appearance under the skin, which might need to be treated with surgery or medicine

  • the filler moving away from the intended treatment area, which may need to be removed using surgery

  • scarring

  • blocked blood vessels in the face, which can cause tissue death and permanent blindness

If you have problems, such as lumpiness, follow any aftercare advice you were given by our practitioner, or contact them for advice about what to do.  See your GP if you have complications that need medical attention, or go to your nearest accident and emergency (A&E) if you have an urgent medical issue.  You can report side effects of dermal fillers through the Yellow Card Scheme website. By reporting side effects, you're providing valuable information about the safety of the product used.

Treatment with these fillers is usually done under local anaesthesia with a pain-relieving ointment. In general, the results are almost immediate.  Treatment with collagen or hyaluronic acid helps your skin to look fresher, smoother and therefore presenting a younger appearance.  Hyaluronic acid is a natural part of the body. It binds water and gives skin volume, lubricates joints and shapes the eyes. With increasing age, the natural hyaluronic acid content of skin loses the capacity to store water. The skin loses moisture and volume, it becomes drier and thinner, and regenerates less efficiently. The loss of volume results in sagging skin. Hyaluronic acid is a form of crystal clear gel, which is injected to restore lost volume back to your lips smoothing lines and wrinkles, giving your lips a fuller form.

The hyaluronic acid gel comes in different viscosity and particle size, so that with the most appropriate treatment for specific wrinkles can be utilised. Hyaluronic acid gives volume to your skin, your facial expression without altering your natural appearance.  Hyaluronic acid is injected in very small volumes with a very fine needle under the skin. The gel adds volume into the skin below wrinkles, plumping and smoothing. Depending on your sensitivity to pain and the planned site of injection, your practitioner may provide you with additional ointment or local anaesthetic. The treatment usually takes 30 minutes, possibly a little longer, depending on the degree of fullness you want.

When receiving a pain-relieving ointment expect to add about 20-30 minutes for the full effect of the ointment to wear off.  The lasting effect differs from client to client and depends on many factors, such as your lifestyle, your skin type, your age and the injection technique used.   In general, our clients come for the treatment within one year for a refresher. After a lip augmentation you should wait up to 6 months before you are generally able to extend the treatment.

Side effects are relatively rare. In general, this treatment could lead to injection-related effects such as swelling, redness, pain, itching, discolouration and tenderness at the injection site. These reactions only last a for up to one week.

Hyaulron Pen No Needle Filler

The Hyaluron Pen is the newest technology of injecting Hylauronic Fillers without a needle.   The purpose of the treatment is to inject Hyaluronic Acid to build volume of lips or reduce appearance of wrinkles.  The pen works with spring and piston, which allow, under pressure, quick and even delivery of serum /Hyaluronic Acid/ under the skin through a hole with a diameter of 0.17 mm, which is two times smaller than the needle thickness for injection. Serums are absorbed much better and faster than with the introduction of a needle. Whether you want to reduce wrinkles or augment your lips size, Hyaluron Pen is the best treatment to have. The HYALURON PEN is the newest innovative needle free device for cosmetic treatments.

It is a needle-free system that has a little discomfort but no pain and uses high enough pressure for a fine stream of hyaluronic acid filler to go into the skin with results lasting from 3 to 12 months.  Hyaluron Pen is not invasive, requiring no downtime and is considered safe for most people who are in overall good health.  The procedure isn’t safe for people who use certain heart medications or for women who are pregnant. You’ll experience minor redness and maybe swelling for a few days after the procedure.  It’s considered effective in lip enlargement, reducing wrinkles and building up skin elasticity. Ideal results can be achieved in one session, a few procedures may be necessary for the fuller lip look. Hyaluron Pen can give the same results as standard dermal filler injections.
